Oscar Predictions

Are you watching the Oscars this year? We are having some neighbors over for dinner and champagne and dress commentary. Husband and I will place bets and he will win every category because he picks the logical, reasonable choice and I pick who should win if there was any justice in the world. And then he'll go you can't bet on someone who wasn't even nominated and I'll go yeah but she should have been nominated and he'll go that's not how betting works and then I'll go that's because no one ever listens to me. I'm a super fun wife.…

Obstinate, Headstrong Girl

I mentioned in my 2017 book round up that I haven't re-read a Jane Austen book in 2 years, which is unusual for me. They are among the books that I re-read constantly and love more every time. I plan to rectify that situation in 2018 with Mansfield Park, because it's been longest since I've re-read that one. I am feeling very Austen-ish this weekend, so I thought I would hit you up with a whole bunch of Jane links this weekend. What do you think of re-imaginings of classic books, or retellings from the point of view of other characters? I love…

Cold Comfort

If you choose to stay indoors today (and I certainly don't blame you...) check out what 22 Writers Said About Donald Trump before the election. And this is a roundup of what writers said after the election. It's sad and scary, but a good reminders: we need the artists to help us make sense of things. I want to stay home and bury my head under the covers like a good Introvert, but my brave and wonderful  daughters insisted we join the Rebel Alliance. So we're making signs and marching with our people today. After the march, our favorite people have invited…

Swag, Bras, Books

Here are some other things I'm up to this long weekend: Cleaning: Eeeeeeeeew. You guys. Wash your damn bras! Learning: Have you ever visited a presidential museum? I've been to the Regan and Nixon museums here in Southern California. What I really loved about them was the opportunity to learn about LIFE. At a different time, in a different place. I especially love learning about what it is like to live inside the White House. They both have great exhibits of the gifts that were given to the presidents. We have always had a fairly strict protocol about presidential gifts in this country, and it's…

Hash, Celebrity Crushes, Negronis

I'm going to assume you are over your New Year's Eve Hangover, that you have started, then modified, and then given up on your Resolution diet, and that you are pretty much settling in to 2017. What can we do? Calm the hell down. That's all. Time for some comfort food. And drinks. Let's not get too crazy. Here's what I'm up to right now: Eating: Salt and Vinegar Potato Hash.  This is basically like a bag of chips for breakfast. Just add a poached egg and it's a meal. See? Don't ever let anyone tell you I don't know how…

Peace Out, 2016

I hate to say, "It can't possibly get any worse," because 2017 might hear me and say HOLD MY BEER! But I will say this: 2016, you suck. We cannot wait to see the backside of you. However you celebrate tonight, my friends, stay safe and well. We need you back here tomorrow. Love you all.

Happy Whatever You Celebrate

You are appreciated and loved, friends. Thank you for hanging out with me. Thanks for talking with me about books, cocktails, and recipes. Thank you for being my people. Whatever you celebrate, I hope it's filled with joy and peace and happiness. If you are not celebrating anything today, I still wish you joy and peace and happiness, today and all days.

It's Practically Here!

Are you almost at meltdown point yet? Is your head ready to explode from too many Christmas carols? Will you scream if you have to go to the mall again? Is your body begging you to lay off the champagne and chocolate and eat a damn vegetable? No? Me either. Party on, righteous dudes. Joe and I celebrated our 22nd anniversary this week with dinner at Umami Burger and a trip to see our favorite comedian, Jake Johannsen afterwards, while dodging fans of the new Star Wars movie. Which is, coincidentally, exactly what we did on our anniversary last year.…

Books. Bookstores. Coffee.

I’m feeling even more bookish than usual this week, so I’m going to hit you up with a good list of literary links today. For the most part I’m not really interested in “Best Of” lists, simply because they are subjective and reductive. But NPR has a rather genius approach to the Best Books of 2016: the list is 300 books long, but you can sort it according to your criteria. You can specify your preferences (“Book Club Reads,” for example, and “For Art Lovers”) and they will whittle that list down appropriately. “Let’s Talk About Sex” gives me twenty…

A Book, A Movie, A Craft, and A Stupid Quiz

Happy December, my friends! I spent November writing the first book of a 4-book romance series that will publish in 2017. I had planned to start book two this weekend but my head is still fuzzy from the last one, so I think I need some time off for good behavior. Also? My house is a disaster. I know, most women say that when their house is perfect and there is like one unfolded dishtowel. But you have to trust me that when I say disaster, I mean it’s getting embarrassing. And I have a high tolerance for messes. (Remember:…
